Truly, modern technology has evolved so much that people can now communicate from one part of the world to another with just a flick of a finger. Using the power of the internet and the world wide web, people can now share their experience with one another within seconds. But, can too much of the world wide web turn you into an internet addict?

Are you starting to spend majority of your time surfing the web and socializing over the net? Do you sneak out of your class and go to the bathroom just to be able to update your status on your social networking accounts? If you are spending a chunk of your time in the web instead of doing something productive in the real world, chances are you are starting to become an internet addict

An internet addict is a person who can’t stop thinking about connecting to the internet and surfing the world wide web. Just like any other person who suffers from addiction, an internet addict can’t function well if he or she can’t browse the web. Internet addicts often check on their smartphones, minute-by-minute, to check if there is an update on their social media accounts, or if their news feeds carry something new. They are often updated with the latest internet trends, but in return they are losing their connections with REAL people.

The internet was first developed as a way to promote faster communication and sharing of information among military personnel. However, as time went on, people found out that the internet can also be used as a way to create a “digital world” wherein people can log-in and log-out anytime that they wish. These social networking sites, online games, web forums and web blogs are all digital communities that have sprung in the wake of the internet revolution.

Although most people don’t suffer from internet addiction, it is kind of alarming how some people get hooked up with the internet so hard that they start to get anxious whenever they aren’t online. These people have already build their own “digital avatar” and they can’t function well when they are not connected to the internet and playing their alter-persona.

People who suffer from internet addiction suffer from mood changes and gets easily irritated when you disturb them while they are online. They are unable to control the amount of time they spend over the web and they won’t even notice that they haven’t eaten for hours, sometimes even days, because of their addiction. Some internet addicts who are also fond of playing games online can’t even sleep because they can’t stop thinking about the games that they play. Aside from being unhealthy physically, internet addiction also limits the ability of the person to communicate and connect with REAL people, often detaching a person from his or her family, friends and community.

If you can’t spend a minute without checking in on your smartphone, ipad, gadgets and tablets, then chances are you are starting to get addicted to the internet too. You might not believe it, but some people have already suffered hard from internet addiction and their health has deteriorated due to lack of eat and sleep. You should not take internet addiction lightly.
