Exercise

A healthy exercise routine includes both aerobic and anaerobic activities.

Aerobics

Physical exercise is a quick, easy way to relieve stress-related tension. Vigorous aerobic exercise has been shown to increase your body's levels of endorphins (a natural sedative) and catecholamines (substances that affect moods).

Aerobic exercise strengthens our heart and lungs and improves our overall use of oxygen. Activities such as fitness walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, and rowing are excellent aerobic choices. Besides causing chemical changes in the brain that may improve moods, exercising regularly can create a sense of commitment and control, which in itself can improve our mental attitudes and self-images.

Many people find that vigorous morning workouts give them a better start on the day. Other people prefer to exercise at the end of their day to help them "unwind" and release pent-up tension. Twenty to thirty minutes of aerobics, done 3 times a week not only benefits your heart, but your peace of mind, too.

If you are a smoker, suffer from a chronic medical condition, or have a personal or family history of heart disease, check with your health care professional before starting any exercise program.

Anaerobic exercise involves exercising isolated groups of muscles in order to increase strength and to improve the mass and tone of muscles. Increasing muscle mass is an important way to improve the body's calorie burning system. Some of these exercises include abdominal crunches, push-ups, pull-ups, and weight lifting. To begin anaerobic exercise safely, you need to consult with your physician first to discuss appropriate starting goals in order to avoid injury. An exercise physiologist or a physical therapist are excellent resources to learn more about safe and effective exercise.

Weightlifting

One anaerobic exercise is weightlifting. While its affect on stress is nil, muscle strengthening through lifting weights is an important part of any exercise program. And I would like to point out just a few of the benefits you will receive through incorporating weightlifting into your exercise routine. First of all, weightlifting increases your strength which enables you to perform daily activities and/or sports better. Secondly, you will strengthen your tendons, ligaments, and most importantly, your bones. As you age, these parts of your body tend to weaken and can break much easier. Strengthening these areas will lesson the chance of breakage. You will also increase your muscle mass. Whether large or small, increase in muscle mass will increase your metabolism, causing you to burn more calories when you workout and even while you sleep. And finally, strengthening your muscles helps improve coordination and balance.

Yoga

Yoga is one of the best ways to reduce the stress in your life. Yoga teaches you to relax and focus within.

Yoga exercise stretches and tones the muscles. It increases endurance and improves flexibility. Yoga controls weight, relieves anxiety and tension, and controls stress.

Yoga's body movements strengthen your back, firms your stomach, and redistributes weight properly. Yoga exercise postures can relieve problems such as headaches, nervousness, among others.

A study at Harvard University Medical School, conducted by medical doctors, revealed, A simple breathing technique can lower blood pressure and decrease anxiety. The results of proper breathing applied on heart patients have proven extremely helpful.

Deep rhythmic breathing provides deep tension release and a noticeable rise in energy level. We learn how to relieve stress, which these days concern us all.

The combination of breathing and movement improves the circulation. Yoga, as it renews the spirit and body, provides well being through physical and mental harmony.

Breathing through your nostrils (instead of breathing through the mouth or through a combination of the nostrils and the mouth) lowers the blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic, but the systolic pressure is reduced more significantly). It also reduces the amplitudes of various brain waves (the alpha waves and the beta waves). Therefore, by keeping the breathing restricted through the nostrils actually helps in getting enhanced calmness from yoga postures.

Its just important for you to know that there are so many ways to incorporate exercise into your life. I believe there is an exercise that is suitable for all different personalities and lifestyles. Finding the most desirable way for you to exercise is the first step.
