I recently received a letter from a client who purchased The Ultimate Weight Loss Power Pack.

The Ultimate Weight Loss Power Pack is a 12-session weight loss course for those who want to not only reach their weight loss goal, but to succeed at it permanently. In a nut shell, it was designed by me during the time that I was doing a lot of weight loss hypnosis sessions with clients and having great success. This has always been an area of specialty for me, having dealt with the issue myself for the majority of my life, as well as having a history of obesity in my family.

I have read practically every book you can think of on the topic and have gathered what I believe to be the 12 Habits of Highly Successful Weight Loss clients.

In the first week’s sessions, you create what is called a “S.M.A.R.T.” goal. I did not personally create the “S.M.A.R.T.” acronym personally, I’ll admit. However, I have found that this system of setting goals has been more effective than any other goal setting method I have ever come across.

The acronym stands for: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Risky, and Timetable. I go over each of these much more thoroughly in the session on goal setting.

And basically during that first week’s worth of sessions you are laying down the foundation for what it is that you want to create over the next 12 weeks. And you can tell if you have created an effective goal for yourself by asking yourself the questions, Is it Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Risky, and what is the Timetable?

Then I will ask you to define for yourself a list of some daily affirmations that relate to that goal.

I actually teach you how to make an affirmation that will be effective for you.

So, I thought I would share this letter, with my answers so that you can get a better understanding of how this works, based on real questions from a customer:

    Hi Victoria and Curtis, I have just started listening to the 12 wk CD set for weight loss and I am wondering if I am doing my goals correctly. Here is what I have done so far for the "specific" part "I am going to be satisfied eating more vegetables and fruit and feel full and satisfied eating smaller portions with no desire to overeat just to enjoy the taste of the food. My desire for sugar and junk foods has completely left me. I am going to enjoy drinking water and my thirst can only be satisfied from water.”

    Hello (name deleted for anonymity), I so appreciate when customers contact me in the beginning of the 12 week program to get feedback on how they are using the program thus far. It is very helpful to me for one, because then I can understand where any confusion or breakdown in my own instruction may be. But more importantly, it shows a sign of your own commitment to the program and making sure it is done correctly. So, thank you for these questions and this opportunity to help you to succeed.

    Regarding the “SPECIFIC” part, this is very specific and is a great start. A few pointers I would like to give you.

    1) Substitute the word "more" with the actual # of fruits and veggies you want to hold yourself to. In other words, I am going to have 5 pieces of fruit and 3 veggies, 7 days a week. Alter this to suit your own goal.

    2) "No desire to overeat" is a negative. The subconscious mind can only hear you giving yourself the command, "desire to overeat" Think in terms of whatever comes after the negative wording such as, don't wont, no, not, etc., as the command that you are giving yourself. Therefore you would simply say, "I enjoy my food even more when I eat smaller portions"

    3) Again, "left me" How about, My desire for healthy foods naturally increases every day"

    4) "I am GOING TO" take out "going to" and that affirmation will be fine. "I enjoy drinking water. It is that only beverage that truly satisfies and quenches my thirst"

    For the "measurable" part, "I am going to release my body fat to get to the weight of 140 lbs. I am going to enjoy shopping for stylish clothes in normal sizes.

    Here, as a result of these changes, I reduce my body fat and weight to 140 pounds. As a result of my new body size, I treat myself to a shopping spree for stylish clothes.

    For the "attainable" part "I am going to enhance my weight loss by becoming more fit by enjoying exercising and being active."

    Basically, here, you don't need to write an affirmation necessarily about each letter in the smart goal. Each letter is a measure of the one goal that you have overall to determine whether it's a good goal or not. Being specific about it and knowing you can measure this with some kind of clarity are the main pieces that create the goal itself. You ask yourself, what specifically is my goal? Is it measurable? Is it attainable? Is it risky?

    And by when do I plan to reach this goal (Timetable)?

    There's only really one OUTCOME you are working toward here; being 140 pds ...

    Where do you plan to be in the 12 week time table? And is THAT attainable, but risky enough to make it exciting.

    The rest of the affirmations are great, because these are MECHANISMS that are going to help you to ACHIEVE your goal. Make sense?

    And "time frame" "I'm excited to see the positive changes I'll be making in the 12 weeks"

    I am completely clueless as to if I'm phrasing these right or even if I'm getting the meaning of the assignment. Any assistance you could give me regarding this would be so appreciated.

    I feel confident I can make this work if I just am using the right verbalizations, which I’m not sure if I am.

    Please advice and by the way, Victoria, your voice is so soothing and calming, I just love hearing you talk. Your nurturing personality really comes through.

    I just want to add that it is this internal insistence on making sure that you are doing this the right way that is going to help you to come through with this. I have a lot of great wonderful clients out there with incredible results. But, I am afraid that not all of them are as successful merely because of questions people don't allow themselves to ask, such as this, in the very beginning.
