Finding Serenity in a Turbulent World

There are more demands placed upon us then ever before. As technology improves and we become more efficient, we place higher expectations on ourselves, and on other people, while higher expectations are placed upon us by others as well. We expect all our experiences to go perfectly.

While there are a lot of glorious things about modern improvements, I think this ultimately makes us a little less tolerant when things go wrong.

Maybe you have found yourself losing your temper during some of these times.

People in general just have a lot more stress than ever before. It’s so important to learn how to create serenity and peace in your life.

You can begin having serenity today by simply making a real intention to have more serenity in your life, and by doing this simple exercise.

What does serenity in the big picture of your life mean to you? I want you to really define it. How would you feel? What does it look and sound like? Where does it happen? Who is involved? Why does this make you feel serene? Really take a moment to describe it. Paint a perfect picture of your life and how much better it could be given the serenity that you describe here.

Now, based on this definition, on a scale of 1 – 10, 10 being living in total bliss, joy, peace and happiness every day, with a tiny bit of healthy stress, how would you rank your level of serenity?

Let’s say that you rank yourself at 5, which my guess would be that on average that is how people will respond to this question.

Now, I want you to decide, what IS an acceptable level of serenity for you to have? Maybe you acknowledge that it is at a 5 and you are fine with that.

Stop here.

Give yourself a swift slap in the face and get REAL with yourself. You would not have gotten this far in this article if you were really happy with that level of serenity. So, it’s time to be honest with yourself. Maybe you feel stuck; maybe you feel that it just can’t be any better. So, if that is the case for you, just pretend that you could have it better and imagine what would be like. What number is realistic. Maybe you can only think of having it at a 6. That is perfectly fine for now. If you can improve it 10% over the next say, 90 days even, think about the quality of life you will be able to create from that point forward. Taking the first step will create momentum and if you choose to take another step toward serenity, great, you’ll be in that much better of a place to have it.

I want you to now think about the things in your life that are standing in the way of your being at the level of serenity you want to have. Just make a list.

Take a look at this list and own one thing on that list that you are going to change NOW.

For example: Your list may look like this:

Traffic

Headaches

Kids

Boss

Not enough time in the day

Etc…

Some of these things you CAN change and you can accept those things. Like traffic. This is a normal part of life that you have to deal with if you have any kind of daily commute to work or school. If you choose to work at home, or work in a situation where you have less of a commute or work different hours, yes this can change. But, for most people, they choose the drive over these other less desirable options.

Accept responsibility for this choice. You always have a choice.

Then choose to do something to help you to accept the traffic. Leave a little earlier for work so you don’t have the stress of being late. Listen to a self-help or classical music CD during the drive. The more you can simply accept that you can’t change it and prepare for it, the more you can actually change this time to time of serenity.

Then there are those things you can change.

Not having enough time in the day, for example. Sorry to be blunt here, but this is simply due to your own poor planning, or lack of planning. You make promises to do things without really knowing if this is something that you can fit into your schedule or not. We are ALL given 24 hours to operate with in a given day. Some of us manage to utilize this time better than others. If this is something that you wish to change, there is plenty of material out on the market that will help you to devise a system to feel more control over your day. Eventually, I’ll have a hypnosis program on this very topic too.
